2017 Morocco Field Trip

In May 2017, the 10th edition of the Magmatisme, Metamorphisme et Mineralisations Associees (3MA) scientific meeting was held in Meknes/Ifrane, northern Morocco.  Richard Ernst and I decided to attend and give presentations on joint projects that we were working on with our Moroccan colleagues, Moha Ikenne and Nasreddine Youbi.  This was also a great opportunity to pre-run the ERTH4807 field course trip to be held in April-May 2018.  We started out in Agadir, giving talks for students at the Ibn Zohr University in Agadir.  From there we headed east through the Souss Valley, the source of famous argan oil, and then headed north towards Ouarzazate.  The town of Taliouine, another stop on our tour, is famous for tea and saffron - saffron is terrific in the local honey!  Ouarzazate is known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” or “Ouarza-wood”, with two movie studios and a movie musuem.  We then crossed the High Atlas mountains to Marrakech, a dynamic city that is home to one of the most famous markets (souks) in Morocco and to Cadi Ayyad University.  The final stretch was from Marrakech to Meknes/Ifrane, where we spent an educational three days at the 3MA conference.  Thanks for Moha Ikenne, Said Balkacim, and Nasser Youbi for taking time to guide us through the intricacies of Moroccan geology!
