Underdown caldera 2016

Kim Klausen and I traveled to Nevada in June to investigate the Underdown Caldera and its outflow unit, the Clipper Gap Tuff, in the Shoshone Mountains of northern Nevada.  We stayed in the picturesque, historic town of Austin on lonely Highway 50.  A huge thank-you to Cindy Walsh, owner of the Cozy Mountain Motel in Austin, for making our stay comfortable.  The Underdown caldera sequence was mapped by Harold Bonham and the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology published his map of the northern Shoshone Mountains in 1970.  The tuffs extend both the the north and south of the map area, and there are mafic lava flows (QTb) exposed in the southern part of the map area.  The area has also seen some gold and silver exploration, and old adits and milling sites are common in the area.  Thanks to Chris Henry and Philipp Ruprecht (UNR) for their help in the field.  Philipp will tell you that a Subaru Outback is a great field vehicle - a we are now believers!
